Rikolto can build on over 40 years’ experience in Senegal. In 2024, we reached 15,020 farmers.
Currently, we are running our Sustainable rice programme, and our Good Food for Cities programme in the cities of Dakar and Thiès.
Sustainable Rice programme highlights for 2024
The number of farmers trained in sustainable SRP production has almost tripled, from less than 3,000 to 8,446. This growth is largely thanks to FEPROBA’s decision to expand the application of SRP practices beyond its irrigated field perimeter to the rainfed valleys. These smaller fields, primarily managed by women, have proved more open to testing new techniques like Urea Deep Placement (UDP). As part of this effort, 1,509 women received four tons of granulated urea. In the delta region, farmers working with FPA faced challenges accessing pre-financing loans from the bank this year due to previous repayment issues. To address this, rice miller SFA, a branch of the Belgian company Durabilis, stepped in to co-finance the new cropping season and oversee the agronomic monitoring system. Looking ahead, we aim to strengthen FPA’s leadership and monitoring capacity to advance the sustainability agenda within this valuable partnership.
Good Food for Cities programme highlights for 2024
Through the GoodFood@School approach, 20 teachers and 200 students at the Daniel Brottier school were introduced to healthy eating practices. In addition, 34 women school canteen cooks, who are also active as street vendors around Daniel Brottier, participated in training sessions about hygiene, safe food handling, and the preparation of nutritious local recipes. As a result, pupils can now purchase snacks directly from these women, improving the quality of students' diets while supporting local livelihoods. A 'Healthy Food Day' mobilised school stakeholders to raise awareness and advocate for scale-up. To strengthen short supply chains and increase access to sustainable products, Rikolto worked with the Association des Unions Maraîchères des Niayes (AUMN) to train 120 "Trainer Champions". They attended sessions on the production and use of supermagro liquid compost, techniques for combining horticultural crops, and the administrative and technical financing of marketing platforms in Sénégal.
