About Rikolto

Sustainable income for farmers and nutritious, affordable food for all: that is what Rikolto works for. Rikolto is an international network organisation with more than 50 years’ experience in partnering with farmer organisations and food chain stakeholders across Africa, Asia, Europe and LatinAmerica.

Rikolto has a global team driven by over 216 people worldwide of 20 different nationalities, based in 5 offices across the world. We work around three global programmes: Sustainable Rice for All, Sustainable Cocoa and Coffee, and Good Food for Cities.

The five regions within Rikolto's network structure are supported by a Global Support Team. This team performs key advisory roles and provides shared services such as finance, monitoring & evaluation, people & organisation, communications and fundraising for the organisation.

Rikolto works with farmer organisations, agri-SMEs and food system stakeholders in multiple countries to promote inclusive, resilient and sustainable food systems. As part of its monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) efforts, Rikolto conducted farmer surveys between 2022 and 2024 to assess farmers' socio-economic characteristics and monitor the outcomes of its interventions.

About the internship

We are looking for three motivated and enthusiastic interns to join our Global Programme Support Team for a period of five months. The interns will conduct a meta-analysis of farmer survey results collected across countries and programmes between 2022 and 2024. Each intern will be responsible for one of the following three global programmes: Good Food for Cities, Sustainable Coffee and Cocoa, and Sustainable Rice for All.

The analysis aims to

  • Generate a consolidated understanding of the socioeconomic profiles of our supported farmers.
  • Assess the impact of Rikolto's initiatives on farmers' practices and socio-economic well-being.
  • Identify trends and patterns across countries, regions and years.
  • Understand how survey results have been used by country teams to inform strategy adjustments.

Your tasks

Working under the supervision of the Impact Coach and the global Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) team, the interns will take a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative enquiry. The methodology will include:

Desk review: Reviewing and understanding the design, methodology and structure of the farmer surveys conducted between 2022 and 2024.

Data consolidation and analysis:

Compiling, cleaning and harmonising farmer survey datasets from the following country programmes:

  • Cocoa and Coffee Programme: Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Peru and Indonesia.
  • Rice Programme: Burkina Faso, Senegal, Tanzania and Indonesia
  • GF4C Programme: Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Indonesia, Vietnam and Latin America

Conduct descriptive and comparative analyses by programme, region, country and year.

Identify key insights into farmers' socio-economic conditions, as well as the impact of Rikolto's interventions on farming practices and farmers' socio-economic well-being.

Qualitative inquiry: Conduct semi-structured interviews with country programme teams to understand how farmer survey data was used for planning, implementation and reporting purposes, and to document success stories, challenges and recommendations for future surveys.

Key tasks

  1. Review the farmer survey tools, methodology and data structure.
  2. Consult with supervisors to define the key areas of analysis and agree on the best way to consolidate the data.
  3. Consolidate the farmer survey data from 2022–2024 from all participating country programmes.
  4. Clean and prepare the data for analysis and visualisation.
  5. Analyse the data across different dimensions (e.g. programme, region, country and year).
  6. Create a dashboard (e.g. in Excel or Power BI) to visually present the synthesised findings.
  7. Conduct interviews with selected Rikolto programme staff to assess how the survey findings have been utilised, producing a summary report that outlines the following: Key findings from the data; Lessons learned from country teams; Recommendations for survey design, use, and programmatic decision-making.
  8. Present the findings to the programme team for reflection and learning purposes.

Deliverables

  1. A consolidated and cleaned farmer survey dataset (2022–2024).
  2. Visualisation dashboard of key findings and trends.
  3. A final summary report containing key insights from the analysis, utilisation of the results, lessons learned, and recommendations.
  4. Present the findings to programme teams.
