Mali

Rikolto builds on track record of over 40 years in agricultural development in the region. In 2025, we reached 3,290 producers in Mali.

Currently, we are running our Sustainable Rice programme in Mali.

Sustainable Rice programme highlights for 2025

2,120 hectares are now under Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) practices, including 145 hectares dedicated to PGS organic rice. A total of 6,500 tonnes of rice were sold on the market. To encourage consumers to choose sustainable rice, we are supporting the National Association of Consumers of Mali in promoting its nutritional, health and economic benefits through media campaigns, live tastings and the 'Café Consommateur'. We also supported the National Platform of Rice Producers (PNPR-M) in training 25 media professionals on the benefits of SRP, to eventually reach a broader consumer base. Training in business management for 80 women and youth resulted in 44 new economically viable entrepreneurs. Among them are 14 women who run businesses producing 'BALO DAFALEN' rice products, as well as providers of hulling services and seed production. These entrepreneurs also benefited from the adoption of iCRA’s Agri-business Cluster Approach, a process that strengthens the relationship between food system actors and resulted in more market players engaging in inclusive, fair and collaborative business relationships. The number of these players increased from 16 to 28.

Projects

Sustainable and organic rice for Malian consumers

This project, funded by the Belgian Cooperation (DGD), aims to strengthen sustainable and competitive rice value chains, increase farmers' incomes, and improve access to quality food products on the market. The project encourages the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the establishment of inclusive trade relationships to create an environment conducive to a more resilient rice food system.
