In 2022, we started operating directly from Guatemala, with a Good Food for Cities programme in Sololá, Nahualá, Concepción, Panajachel and San Andrés, and a Sustainable Cocoa & coffee programme. In 2025, we supported 4.424 cocoa, coffee and vegetable producers.
As of 2015, we have been indirectly active in the country through a regional knowledge management project in Central America’s cocoa sector. In 2016, we started implementing another regional knowledge management project directed at the horticulture sector.
Sustainable Cocoa and Coffee programme highlights for 2025
We supported 4,187 cocoa and coffee producers to implement sustainable and climate-smart practices, establishing 300 hectares of coffee and 355 hectares of cocoa under agroforestry systems. Plots also produced 26 tons of food for household consumption and local sale, including honey from cocoa fields. Together with local organisation Fundalachua, we developed a technical proposal for agroforestry design in cocoa that is now being shared across the Northern Cocoa Value Chain Platform. A key feature of the proposal is its alignment with national forestry incentives, allowing producers to receive around $365 per hectare annually and turning conservation into a reliable source of income.
Good Food for Cities programme highlights for 2025
In 2025, a group of 23 Kaqchikel Maya indigenous women reached an important milestone, turning their family egg production activities into a viable business model. Their journey began in 2023 with Rikolto’s support, including technical training in farm management, marketing, and leadership. They are now an example within the COINDI cooperative, of which they are members, with 35 new entrepreneurs currently being trained to replicate the model and approximately 378 families benefiting as consumers of the eggs. The model has also been replicated by the partner organisation CORCI, engaging 60 additional producers with funding from EARTH University.
