Every three years we at Rikolto (previously Vredeseilanden/VECO) perform an extensive impact analysis of our development programmes. We have now made an effort to present these results on this page in a clear way. It is the first step of a work in progress. That is why in this blogpost we want to take a minute and think about how we go about measuring the impact of our work.

Starting an eco-tourism project? Selling innovative products like soap and cream made from cocoa? What are the opportunities for rural youth to tackle high unemployment rates? Six young Nicaraguan cocoa producers got inspired during an exchange trip in Honduras, to be able to set up their own start-ups in their home communities.

Global sales of most Fairtrade certified products continue to increase annually. But what about the farmer’s choice? Does he/she prefer producing for domestic markets, or is the advantage of complying to the Fairtrade standards bigger? A team of researchers from the University of Leuven have asked this question to rice farmers in Savalou, Benin, thus filling a gap in studies on Fairtrade.

How to scale up initiatives that build trust between actors in the food chain, while at the same time ensure the full participation of smallholder farmers? This blog post shares some key reflections from the workshop “Scaling up the trust networks for food safety with small farmers” where VECO Vietnam and its partners shared their experience on Participatory Guarantee Systems.

Will smallholder cocoa farmers remain competitive in Central America? This was the main question throughout a learning journey that was organised by The National Cocoa Value Chain Committee of Honduras, VECO Mesoamérica, Sustainable Food Lab and the World Cocoa Foundation. The collaboration between Swiss company Chocholats Halba and the Producers Association of Agroforestry Systems in the department of Olancho (Honduras) has gained interest at national and international level. It led to the start of a new ambitious project to create new jobs in smallholder farmers’ communities, and at the same time reforesting Olancho.

VECO Andino, the National Coffee Board (JNC) and WeFarm join forces to give 600 coffee families access to knowledge through the use of WeFarm technology. The platform allows farmers to discuss the issues they experience over SMS.

During the sessions of day 2 representatives from the finance and agrifood sectors talked about their expectations regarding farmers’ organizations and their contributions to building long-lasting relationships.

On Thursday and Friday December 8 & 9th, the first Building rust Seminar was organised by VECO. The participating public consisted of 92 capacity builders, representatives of 33 farmer organisations (3 continents), 16 representatives of financial institutions and 31 delegates of food industry and retail.

In the last quarter of 2016, VECO Belgium initiated a cocreation process with retail professionals and consumers. Our common goal? To come up with tools and processes to mainstream sustainable food consumption.

Our farmers are growing old. And truth is, they produce about 80% of our food. 90% of the farms worldwide are run by individual farmers or families, but nowadays it´s difficult to spot a youngster in the field. So, how can farming still be attractive for youngsters?

Vredeseilanden/VECO’s house is under renovation. It is not however our office building that is being rebuilt, it’s our organisation. From January 1st 2017 our organisational structure will undergo a total makeover and we will become an international network organisation.

Between October 14-16, 2016, VECO Belgium, VECO Mesoamerica and VECO Andino met with partner cities and strategic allies in the city of Quito, host of the UN Habitat III conference. As a result, we are proud to introduce you to our new international cluster: Cities for food Transition (C4FT).

The Forum on Financial Strengthening and Access to Financing in Small-Scale Organizations was held in Managua - Nicaragua on September 24th. This event was attended by over a hundred people related to financing, production, processing, marketing, exports and provision of development services.

Between April 2015 and June 2016, VECO Vietnam and Duy Tien district’s Women’s Union implemented the project « Scaling out PGS among smallholder farmers, consumers and private actors in Vietnam » in Ha Nam province. The project which was generously funded by Both Ends and 11.11.11 aimed to set up a local Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) for organic vegetables, and to strengthen the Trac Van Collaborative Group, a recently-formed farmer organisation, in order to better link farmers with the market.
